Lucca Italy Tourist Information and Vacation Guide
The ancient city walls (ramparts) that completely surround the city of Lucca Italy were built in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Although the ramparts were originally intended to keep out invaders, they currently help to keep out vehicles, thereby making Lucca a pedestrian friendly community.
There are several gates through the city walls, including one passageway near Lucca's central train station.
The Lucca ramparts have been transformed into a long pedestrian promenade and green belt that is popular for hiking and cycling.
